Subject: Conservation, Repair or Restoration?

Peter Stone, in his classic Oriental Rug Repair (1981) writes: “Conservation is preserving an object with as little change to the object as possible. The goal is to prevent further damage or deterioration. Restoration is an attempt to return an object to its original or first condition.” A lively and timely discussion about what’s realistic and best practice versus client expectations and cost. Before and after photos and samples to see. Attendees are encouraged to bring pictures and pieces to share.
Thea Sand, a Restoration Industry Association Certified Rug Specialist, is President of Emmanuel’s Rug and Upholstery Cleaners, and a fourth-generation expert in cleaning, repair, and restoration. Emmanuel’s, which was founded by Thea’s great-grandfather in 1907, has been continuously family-owned and operated in Seattle, WA for over 100 years.
Thea is an IICRC Senior Floor Covering Inspector, expert witness, appraiser and floor covering consultant since 1995. She is currently President of the Carpet Cleaners Institute of the Northwest and a board member of the National Institute of Rug Cleaners (NIRC) and a member of the Seattle Textile and Rug Society. She has facilitated technical writing in inspector certification classes at the Academy of Textiles and Flooring in Whittier CA and teaches Oriental rug repair.

Subjects: Modern Renaissance in Turkish Rug
Weaving and Appraising: Modern vs. Old vs. Antique Rugs from Different Countries.
Presenter: Richard Amatulli, CRA.
Location: Building (1) Floor 4, Rm 4-B-1.
Rich will discuss the modern renaissance in Turkish rug weaving from the 2nd half of the 20th Century to the present and how similar productions in other countries evolvedduring the same period. He will also address the appraising difficulties inherent in modern versus old versus antique rugs from the different countries. Rich Amatulli is the Managing/Member of Amatulli & Sons, LLC a collection and evolution of three companies Turamco, Inc., Classics of Ridgefield, Inc, and Amatulli Imports, Inc, originally founded in 1968.
He is a retired Colonel from the US Army, Middle East Specialist for 28 years, former professor of ME Area studies and Earth Sciences at USMA and U. of I. He has lectured and written extensively on rug weaving as an industry while establishing manufacturing, importing and retailing of Oriental rugs both abroad and in the US. He is currently Vice President of ORRA, a Certified Rug Appraiser and member of ORRA’s Education Committee.

Location: Building (1) Floor 4, Rm 4-B-1.* Open to ORRA members only.
This certification is generally accepted by the U.S. banking and court systems as well as the U.S. Customs Dept., the I.R.S. and major insurance companies. Members will be tested on historical and technical knowledge of hand-knotted rugs as well as proper identification of 40 Oriental rugs onsite.
